Carolina Giraldo Navarro, better known as Karol G, born on February 14, 1991, is a prominent Colombian singer-songwriter. As a leading figure in reggaeton and Latin trap music, especially among female artists, she has been awarded five Latin Grammy Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, and received two Grammy Award nominations. Her accomplishments have been acknowledged with the Rulebreaker Award at Billboard Women in Music and the Spirit of Hope Award at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. Additionally, her contributions to the music industry have led to the establishment of five Guinness World Records.
Karol G's musical journey began in her hometown of Medellín, where she first gained recognition as a teenager on the Colombian version of The X Factor. In 2014, she relocated to New York City to further her understanding of the music industry and signed with Universal Music Latino. Her rise to fame was catalyzed by her collaboration with Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny on the hit song "Ahora Me Llama," which served as the lead single for her debut album "Unstoppable" released in 2017. This album features notable tracks like "A Ella," a female empowerment anthem, as well as "Casi Nada," "Hello" (featuring Ozuna), and "Muñeco de Lego." In 2018, she gained significant attention in Latin America with her duet "Secreto" alongside Puerto Rican artist Anuel AA, which coincided with the public confirmation of their relationship. That year also saw her collaboration with Argentine singer Tini on "Princesa," and she was honored with the Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
July 2019 marked the release of "China," a collaboration with Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Ozuna, and J Balvin, earning her first music video to surpass one billion views on YouTube. Earlier, in May 2019, Karol G introduced her album "Ocean," showcasing a departure from her previous style by blending a more relaxed sound with reggaetón influences. The album includes hits like the title track (a duet with Jessie Reyez), "Pineapple," "Punto G," and "Mi Cama," with the latter climbing into the top 25 of the U.S. Hot Latin Songs chart. Her 2019 track "Tusa," featuring Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj, achieved international success, earning a 28× Latin platinum certification by the RIAA and maintaining a 25-week presence on the Hot Latin Songs chart. In 2020, she received four Latin Grammy nominations and continued to release successful singles like "Ay, Dios Mío!," "Bichota," and "Location" during the COVID-19 pandemic. These singles led up to her third album, "KG0516," released in early 2021 and topping the U.S. Latin albums chart.
In early 2023, Karol G's collaboration with Shakira on "TQG" reached No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, marking her highest-charting single in the mainstream U.S. Following this success, she released her fourth album "Mañana Será Bonito" in spring 2023, making history as the first Spanish-language album by a female artist to debut at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200, which primarily features English-language records.
