Christopher Anthony Lunsford, who goes by the stage name Oliver Anthony and releases music under Oliver Anthony Music, is an American country-folk singer-songwriter. In August 2023, he independently released the single "Rich Men North of Richmond," which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This achievement made Anthony the first artist to debut at the top of the chart without any prior charting history.
Lunsford, known for his country-folk style, adopted the stage name "Oliver Anthony" as a tribute to his grandfather and the Depression era.
Anthony began writing music in 2021 and has been releasing music under the name Oliver Anthony Music since 2022. Winston Marshall likened Anthony's performance in his song "Doggonit" to a character from Hillbilly Elegy. His music is influenced by Hank Williams.
He mentioned receiving messages from people who found his music helpful in dealing with their life struggles, giving him a sense of purpose. Anthony had been grappling with mental health issues and alcohol abuse for five years. In July 2023, he made a promise to get sober and follow his dream, leading to the creation of "Rich Men North of Richmond."
Anthony performed a free show at a farmers market in Barco, North Carolina, in August, where he opened with verses from Psalm 37 about evildoers and was joined by surprise guest Jamey Johnson. Several of Anthony's songs ranked high on iTunes during that month, including "I've Got to Get Sober," which reached No. 3 on the Apple platform.
His song "Aint Gotta Dollar," which focuses on self-reliance without spending money, achieved success on platforms like Spotify's Viral 50 list and iTunes. Many members of the public reached out to express how deeply they connected with the song.
In an August 17 Facebook post, Anthony attributed his popularity to the authenticity of his music, explaining that he wrote these songs while experiencing mental health and depression, which resonated with millions of people on a profound level.
Anthony's second documented public concert, in Moyock, North Carolina, began uniquely with him reading a passage from the Bible, as described by Billboard.
