Jane's Addiction, a prominent American rock group from Los Angeles, was established in 1985. The lineup includes Perry Farrell on vocals, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins, and bassist Eric Avery. Pioneers in the early 1990s alternative rock scene, they achieved substantial media and commercial success in the U.S.
The band emerged following the dissolution of Farrell's prior band, Psi Com, and debuted with a live album under their name in 1987. This release caught Warner Bros. Records' attention. Their first two studio albums, "Nothing's Shocking" (1988) and "Ritual de lo Habitual" (1990), garnered critical praise and a growing fanbase, positioning them as icons in what Farrell termed the "Alternative Nation." Their 1991 farewell tour initiated the first Lollapalooza, now a staple alternative rock festival.
Reuniting in 1997, they toured with Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers replacing Avery. A second reunion in 2001 saw Martyn LeNoble and later Chris Chaney on bass. The band's third studio album, "Strays," was released in 2003, but they disbanded again in 2004. A reunion of the original members occurred in 2008, leading to a global tour. Avery left in 2010 amidst new material development. The band's fourth studio album, "The Great Escape Artist," was released in 2011, with Chaney participating in its recording and tour.
From 2012 to 2022, the band continued to perform sporadically. In August 2022, Avery rejoined after twelve years, coinciding with a tour alongside the Smashing Pumpkins. Navarro, struggling with long COVID, was temporarily replaced by Troy Van Leeuwen from Queens of the Stone Age for this tour. As Farrell, Avery, and Perkins worked on new material, Navarro's absence persisted, leading to Josh Klinghoffer being named his touring substitute in 2023.
